Abstract:
The sediment dredging was conducted for decreasing the pollution load and controlling the eutrophication in Xuanwu Lake in 1998. The monitoring results of total nitrogen (TN) , total phosphorus (TP) and heavy metals in sediment were used to assess the effect of the dredging. Compared with 1998 , TP content of the sediment decreased slightly in 1999 , but increased in 2000. A continuous increase of TN content in sediment took place after dredging. At the same time , the pollution loading of heavy metals , such as Hg , Cu , Pb , Cd , Cr , has been rising since 1998. Especially , in 2000 Hg content in Northwestern part of Xuanwu Lake was 36 times as much as that in 1997 (before dredging) .
